The SME Lighting Support Scheme
Greaney Glass is a family run, commercial glazing company established in 1973. As one of the largest glass processors and distributors in Ireland they have a production facility of greater than 70,000sq ft in East Galway.
The company engaged with energy consultants, Electric Skyline who surveyed their facility to identify any energy saving opportunities that may be available. Electric Skyline’s came up with the goal to improve the lux levels and energy efficiency of all their lighting in their facility.
After Greaney Glass acknowledged an investment was required for this upgrade, they linked in with SEAI and took the opportunity to get involved with the Lighting Support Scheme for SME’s.
Upgrading from fluorescent lamps to LED energy efficient lights
The lighting upgrade included replacing 516 fluorescent lamps with 256 LED commercial highbays. This resulted in better quality illumination for the office and warehouse as well as a reduction in overall energy costs.
Before the upgrade, fluorescent luminaires used 192,181 kwh per annum in comparison to the new LED luminaires which use 77,551 kwh per annum (savings Kwh per annum are now 60%).
The factory is now a much brighter and a more pleasant place to work. It is also simpler to detect any defects and imperfections in the glass with the naked eye. Office based tasks are easier too and outdoor activities in the yard such as loading of commercial vehicles are safer due to better lux levels.
Staff have also noticed the difference with less shaded areas around structural columns. This makes reading documentation on labels and computer scanners easier to view as the distribution of light is dispersed more evenly.
The lighting upgrade resulted in electricity savings of €15,256 per year and an annual saving of 44.6 tonnes of CO2. There are now 260 less light fittings, which means there are fewer inspections required annually.
We were fortunate not to experience any challenges. The majority of the works were carried out throughout the night and at weekends and it all ran smoothly. All in all it was a trouble free experience. These upgrades resulted in a 60% energy saving and an overall saving of €15,256 for Greaney Glass in the first year.
